🚨 BREAKING: Ohio’s HB 486 — the “Charlie Kirk American Heritage Act” — is a Christian-nationalist push to rewrite history inside public classrooms.

Ohio lawmakers just introduced HB 486, a bill that would require public schools to teach a one-sided, “positive” history of Christianity in America — while ignoring the harm done in Christianity’s name, erasing other faith traditions, and sidelining the contributions (and the existence) of LGBTQ+ people, Indigenous peoples, women, immigrants, and non-Christian communities.

This is not a neutral lesson about religion’s role in U.S. history.
This is an attempt to smash the wall between church and state and turn public classrooms into vehicles for a political agenda.

🔎 HB 486 cherry-picks the Bible’s role in history — celebrating figures like Dr. King without acknowledging how many Christian leaders used scripture to justify slavery, segregation, the removal of Indigenous people, the oppression of women, and the persecution of LGBTQ+ Americans.
By whitewashing that history, the bill advances a revisionist Christian-nationalist narrative that our students — and our democracy — cannot afford.

Public schools must remain inclusive and evidence-based spaces that tell the whole story — the achievements and the failures — and that respect every child’s background and belief.

✊ We call on Ohioans — parents, educators, faith leaders, and students — to speak out against HB 486.
Protect real history.
Protect every child’s right to a public education free from religious favoritism.

🌎 Not just Ohio: Bills like HB 486 are part of a coordinated push nationwide.
• Texas and Louisiana have tried to mandate Ten Commandments displays in classrooms — both tied up in federal court.
• Oklahoma’s superintendent ordered Bible-infused curriculum; lawsuits forced a pause.
• Montana and Alabama advanced “released-time” and elective-credit schemes for off-campus religious instruction.
• Nebraska and Missouri lawmakers have proposed or passed Bible-centric courses.

These efforts share one goal: to privilege Christianity in public schools at the expense of honest history and every child’s religious freedom.

🛑 Ohio’s HB 486 cannot be seen in isolation — it’s part of a national playbook to breach the wall between church and state.
