🎉 Major Win for Secular Public Schools
The U.S. Supreme Court has quietly but decisively affirmed what we’ve been saying all along: public school events are not places for state-sponsored religious revivals.
In Cambridge Christian School v. Florida High School Athletic Association, the Court denied certiorari — with no dissents — leaving in place a strong 11th Circuit ruling that pre-game messages over the PA system at state championship games are government speech, not a free-for-all for coercive prayer.
This means:
✔️ Santa Fe v. Doe (2000) — the landmark case barring school-sponsored prayer at football games — still stands firmly.
✔️ State athletic associations and school districts can’t hijack public events to impose religious messaging on students.
✔️ Students and families retain their right to attend public school events free from pressure, proselytizing, or religious coercion.
This is an important reminder that even in a turbulent legal landscape, the courts continue to recognize that neutrality — not endorsement — is the constitutional standard.
SEA applauds this outcome and stands with every student who simply wants to participate in public school life without being pushed toward a particular faith.

- Facebook User: I fought this in high school. My Catholic principal thought we should start the day with the announcements and prayer. I reminded him it was a public school and that would work ONLY if we allowed different religions to have a chance to participate. A different denomination prayer every day. He agreed and thought a student of that denomination could read the prayer that morning. So I bought the Satanic bible (remember malls and book stores?) and he saw me reading it at study hall. He was freaking out! I was going to go to Hell and all that. I explained to him I was looking for the prayer that would be read some morning in the future. By the time I got done pointing out the problems he would be causing, he gave up the idea. I got prayer over the loudspeaker stopped and I also got his “everyone in the school must wear uniforms” idea stopped. He said Christ needed me way back when to provide compelling arguments. He would have been spared of the cross. Students prayed at lunch, and no one had an issue with it. If they want to pray on their own time, fine. Making us all join in, no. Oh to live in a world where people mind their own business and don’t feel compelled to change others.
