📌 SB 171 update (West Virginia):
A state senator confirmed today that SB 171 was removed from the Senate Education Committee agenda after concerns were raised.
As the senator stated:
“That bill was initially placed on the Senate Education Committee agenda but then removed after a number of you and fellow Senators raised concerns about it. I’m hopeful it will not return to the agenda.”
SB 171 would have expanded requirements around released time religious instruction during the public school day.
Secular Education Association submitted formal opposition and communicated concerns during this process.
Early engagement and documented opposition can influence legislative outcomes. SEA will continue monitoring this bill closely.
