NORTH CAROLINA 🚨 PUBLIC SCHOOLS DESERVE ACCURATE REPORTING — NOT LIFEWISE TALKING POINTS.

Albemarle Observer has now published multiple glowing stories about LifeWise Academy. The problem isn’t simply that they’re favorable.

👉The coverage gets important facts wrong, repeats LifeWise-promoted claims with little scrutiny, and openly cheers supporters while insulting a critic. 😬

❌ CLAIM: North Carolina’s new law “bars” released-time religious instruction from cutting into core curriculum time.

False.

State law does not prohibit students from missing core classes. In fact, it specifically says participating students must make up the schoolwork they miss. If Edenton-Chowan has a stronger local rule, say that.

LOCAL POLICY ≠ STATE LAW.

❌ CLAIM: Students may be excused for one to five hours a week.

Current state law says one to four hours.

⚠️ Then come the LifeWise research claims.

The reporter is accurately recounting what a LifeWise supporter told the board — including claims of dramatically lower absences, fewer suspensions and better ELA scores.

But those disputed, LifeWise-promoted statistics are given paragraphs of space with almost no independent scrutiny of the study itself. And that’s a mistake. SEA has already examined this research and published a rebuttal explaining why those impressive numbers do not establish what LifeWise wants communities to believe they establish.

And then there’s the tone. 👀 LifeWise supporters get:

➡️ “that speaks volumes.”
➡️ “Good bookstore!”
➡️ “Eight children, wow… Salute!”

Someone encouraging the community to scrutinize LifeWise gets:

➡️ “bless your heart agitator.”

😳 That isn’t even pretending to be neutral.
And we know why this matters because we’ve watched this exact playbook unfold before — in Ohio, Indiana, Oklahoma, Montana, Iowa, Texas, and now North Carolina.

First it’s a harmless little “local” Bible program.

Then come the glowing stories.

Then the impressive “research.”

Then critics are dismissed.

Then the programs multiply.

Then comes the lobbying.

Then the laws change.

🚨Then local school districts lose the ability to say no.

Journalism is supposed to interrogate the sales pitch — not help deliver it. 😡 The Albemarle Observer can support LifeWise in an opinion column if it wants.

But news coverage should do the bare minimum:

GET THE LAW RIGHT.
SCRUTINIZE THE CLAIMS.
SEPARATE COMMENTARY FROM REPORTING.
