Wake County Public School System in North Carolina is moving forward with a new policy allowing students to leave school during the school day for religious instruction.
Not because the district suddenly decided this was a good idea… Because the state made them. 💁♀️
North Carolina’s new law requires every school district to excuse students for one to four hours every week for released-time religious instruction. Wake County is choosing the minimum: one hour.
And some board members are making it very clear how they feel about it.
One pointed out that an hour every week amounts to roughly 39 hours of missed school over the course of a year. Another said the state keeps adding academic requirements while simultaneously taking instructional time away.
And who is already waiting to take advantage of the new mandate? Yep. You guessed it. LifeWise Academy.
North Carolina Public Radio – WUNC reports that LifeWise plans to launch for first- and second-graders at Willow Springs Elementary in Wake County. The article also notes CBS News Texas’ reporting that LifeWise helped push “copy and paste” released-time legislation in multiple states.

👉A separate bill proposing this policy didn’t pass.
👉Then the provision showed up in the state budget and became law anyway.
That is exactly why we keep telling people not to wait until a LifeWise bus appears outside their elementary school. By then, the fight may have already happened at the statehouse.
