“I wanna share something to help reiterate how necessary it is to run real, full and standardized background checks.
I’ve been left unsupervised while volunteering at my daughter’s school half a dozen times this year, even more so at other schools she attended in years past were I also chaperoned field trips. Not once have these schools asked me to actually fill out a background check, even though it’s what’s in the policy. Submitting my name has always been the extent of it.
Last month I was asked to volunteer for an event put on through the school by a third party organization, they did do a “background check” and I laughed because it was the exact same question as LifeWise asked….. “Do you have any convictions that would prevent you from working with children?” Well no, at least I certainly don’t think I do…. and of course I was approved to help with this event.
Today however, I dropped my daughter off for a choir performance which I had also signed up to chaperone. The difference is, this is a statewide event put on by a the state chapter of a national organization, and they actually did a real background check. They denied me approval to chaperone (the day of) because of my extensive record.
So why then have I been allowed to roam the hallways of the schools alone? Why are other organizations getting away with asking an objective question the people could just lie about? Why isn’t a full background check being done at every level?
I am being denied because of non violent, non child related and frankly petty charges that are YEARS old…..
Meanwhile LifeWise continues to place children in the same churches (and factories) as convicted pedophiles and hire predators like Renee Beck, people involved in covering up sexual abuse like Robin Frey, violent wife beaters like Buddy Workman, and people with child endangerment charges like Jillian Jaunzemis.”
What people are saying:
- Facebook User: My kids elementary school does a full background check on volunteers and will turn people away, but no one cross referenced it when I walked in the first time. They just asked if I had passed. Technically we are not supposed to be alone with the kids but kids are kids and tend to run off and you have to chase them, or refuse to go to their next class saying they will stay in the room with you while the teacher marches the rest of the class to another room. the kids put so much trust in me and its heartbreaking when I have to deny them one on one time due to their safety and mine. I tell them not to ever go off with or be alone with anyone that isn’t their teacher and we all know even that isn’t 100% guaranteed to be safe. I think of the times I hid out in teachers rooms from bullies during lunch in the 90’s, and now the teachers have to leave their room and lock their door and go to the lounge due to people who have taken advantage of children’s trust. Ironically it is often the same people who worry about what gender is in what bathroom that will leave their kids with random strangers as long as they look gender conforming and carry a bible.
- Facebook User: Background checks are absolutely necessary! We have parents out here painting their baby boys nails and bringing in foster children and doing God only knows what to them.
- Facebook User: i think it’s also important for people to use their actual names on their posts
