We have noticed a trend where Lifewise keeps leaning into this narrative that kids are only missing lunch and recess. It was most recently a talking point in a quote from today’s article in the Detroit Free Press.
Lunch and recess are very important and much needed periods of unstructured socialization, but it cannot be overlooked that this model is only used some of the time. In fact this timeslot is LifeWise’s least preferred as it provides much lower enrollment numbers when compared to other scheduling times as kids don’t want to miss lunch and recess.
There are a myriad of options LifeWise promotes for scheduling… many children are missing specials such as art, STEM and music, some schools make a whole new period and put those who don’t go to LifeWise in a study hall, some students miss enrichment periods and in some schools children are even missing core curriculum classes such as social studies and science according to testimony from teachers and emails received in records requests.

The spirit of the provision would be, for example, to allow a Muslim who prays at very specific times of the day. But Lifewise is turning that fundamental respect of specific religious practices into a child-driven proselytization campaign by “othering” those who don’t attend Lifewise. It is legal, and in Ohio, there was a new law requiring a district must have a policy to allow it in some fashion.
