• Facebook User: Leader in Me is an SEL curriculum that we piloted and now use in our school district. I was on the school board when these decisions were being made and was initially highly skeptical of an SEL curriculum based on “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” I’ve seen how the original book has been used by many ultra conservative and religious groups so I made a point of going to the trainings and looking through all of the materials. I was pleasantly surprised with what I saw and the positive impact the curriculum had on our school environments and on the students individually, including the positive changes I saw in my own son. There is nothing religious in the Leader in Me curriculum and trainings unless it is added in by the district after the fact.

  That said, I have a real issue with Lifewise being tied back into it and discussed at a leadership night during a school function. It’s just one more example of how something benign is being used to further the goals of groups like Lifewise.

  While I think any religion can find examples of positive leadership in their religious texts, to bring up Lifewise in this context is inappropriate. Maybe the student didn’t realize that, but it certainly shouldn’t highlighted
