“The lesson was on the crucifixion. The teacher asked the seven- and eight-year-olds to write down a list of their “most troublesome sins”. She had brought an example of a whip to show them how Jesus was tortured before his death. “There would have been no skin left on Jesus’s back. His ribs would have been exposed because once it takes your skin off, when they keep going it’s digging into your organs,” she said. After the beating his raw body rubbed against the cross. “Think of the splinters!” she exclaimed.”

  • Facebook User: Fundamentalists believe this is an appropriate lesson for all ages. Children are often told THEIR sins are the reason Jesus was tortured.
    • Facebook User: From a Christian perspective, there are several understandings of Jesus’ purpose on earth, including as a role model, to show how to live out peace, forgiveness, and extravagant love. The several understandings (theories of atonement) include God making Jesus die to protect God’s honor from human sin. That’s the one fundamentalists prefer. (master’s in divinity, here)
    • Facebook User: Facebook User I was first told this and made to feel like a terrible sinner responsible for Jesus’ pain at age 5. I cried so hard and begged for forgiveness. I WAS 5! This indoctrination led to a life of never feeling like I was good. I’m so thankful I got away and my children will never feel this way.
  • Facebook User: I ended up at a Christian preschool when I was about four and they showed us a cartoon about the crucifixion. I doubt it was very explicit, but I hadn’t ever heard the story of the crucifixion and I was absolutely horrified. It’s been thirty years and I can still remember how traumatic it was. I can’t even imagine how these poor kids will look back on something this graphic
  • Facebook User: Grooming and terrorizing kids is NOT OK ffs. Ask me how I know.
  • Facebook User: Sad and twisted!
  • Facebook User: Picturing my children listening to words like that makes me sick to my stomach.
  • Facebook User: Moms for Liberty would be marching on the library and demanding a ban if this description appeared in any book marketed to 2nd and 3rd graders.
  • Facebook User: 🤢🤮
