Phil King – NPUSC Board of Trustee District III
Thank you for standing up for the safety of ALL of your students. We hope your courage will inspire others to follow suit. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
“In mid-May 2025, NPUSC again inquired about the nature and depth of background checks of volunteers, particularly after learning the programming would be run 3 miles away from the school thus requiring transportation to be provided by Life Wise.
NPUSC inquired about not only background checks but driving records of volunteer drivers. Finally, NPUSC communicated background checks must be shared by LifeWise and/or volunteers will participate in the same Volunteer Background Check process completed by all NPUSC volunteers, which have been provided by the Indiana State Police.
After nearly six weeks of waiting. LifeWise informed NPUSC they would not share background check results of their volunteers with NPUSC, would not require their volunteers to participate in our volunteer background check process, and are under no legal obligation to cooperate with the request…
NPUSC is extremely concerned about this development and finds this unacceptable. NPUSC works to approach student safety with the utmost seriousness. It is unacceptable that students would leave for programming during a school day, with NO BACKGROUND INFORMATION provided to NPUSC, about the adult volunteers that will work with students, particularly off-site.
As a result, NPUSC WILL NOT consent to students being released to LifeWise programming during a school day until an appropriate background check process is implemented.”
