🧡 This Thanksgiving, SEA is choosing honesty over mythology.
No pilgrims-and-Indians fairy tales. No sanitized “peaceful feast.”
Public schools—and our families—deserve the truth.
The truth:
• The first Thanksgiving story is largely invented and has been used for generations to erase Indigenous violence, land theft, forced conversions, and cultural suppression.
• Indigenous nations were already thriving, complex societies long before European arrival—and also suffered catastrophic losses after it.
• Children deserve accurate, secular history, not nationalist mythology dressed up as a holiday.
What we’re grateful for:
• Educators who refuse to repeat myths
• Families demanding evidence-based curriculum
• Indigenous voices reshaping how we teach American history
• Communities working toward honest, inclusive public schools
This year, let’s teach gratitude without lies.
Let’s honor Indigenous reality—not a colonial bedtime story.
Gratitude is powerful.
BUT – So is truth.
Cherish your family and friends, but don’t get caught up in the story we all grew up with.
Our kids deserve the truth.
