📣 Ohio’s New Release-Time Law Is Fueling LifeWise’s Rapid Expansion — But Parents Are Sounding the Alarm
A new Ohio Capital Journal article lays out exactly what many of us have been warning: the moment Ohio required every school district to adopt a release-time policy, LifeWise exploded across the state.
LifeWise is now operating in more than 260 Ohio school districts, with plans to hit 300 by the end of the school year — a 62.5% increase in just one year.
And yes, that growth is happening because lawmakers took away a district’s ability to say no.
As parent advocate and Secular Education Association co-founder Zach Parrish put it:
“You have to go change the laws because schools are telling you no… Of course, you’re going to grow.”
Meanwhile, families are reporting the same harms we see in district after district: bullying, misleading permission slips, and young children being taught ideas that directly contradict their own parents’ values.
SEA’s own Ohio organizer, Kitty Schwanitz, told reporters what we hear from parents constantly:
“A lot of parents aren’t looking at the fine print… Then they realize what their kids are being taught, and their kids are crying and getting bullied.”
This isn’t “church and state working together.”
This is pressure, coercion, and public instructional time being handed over to an outside religious franchise with almost no oversight.
Ohio may require release-time policies — but no district is required to hand the school day over to LifeWise.
SEA will continue supporting Ohio families who are speaking out, organizing locally, and demanding transparency and accountability. Our kids deserve a public education free from pressure, segregation, and religious targeting.
