๐ŸŽ„ When a Public School Holiday Concert Becomes a Religious Pageant ๐ŸŽ„

These photos are from a public school concert at Elgin Local Schools. Elgin Comets

What families expected: a seasonal music program.
What actually happened: a full Nativity scene, complete with angels, shepherds, crowns, and explicit Christian imagery โ€” staged during the school day, on a public school stage, under a U.S. flag.

This isnโ€™t about being anti-Christmas or anti-Christian.
Itโ€™s about public schools not promoting one religion over others โ€” or religion over non-religion โ€” especially when participation involves children who may not share those beliefs.

Public schools serve:
โ€ข Christian families
โ€ข Jewish families
โ€ข Muslim families
โ€ข Hindu families
โ€ข Secular families
โ€ข Families of every belief and none

When a school production centers a specific religious doctrine, it sends a clear message about who belongs โ€” and who does not.

Holiday concerts can be:
โœ” festive
โœ” inclusive
โœ” joyful
โœ” culturally diverse

They do not need to be religious pageants to celebrate the season.

Parents should never have to choose between:
โŒ pulling their child from a school event
โŒ or watching their public school endorse a faith that isnโ€™t theirs

Schools cross the line when a reasonable observer would conclude:

โ€œThe school is promoting or endorsing Christianity.โ€

A Nativity pageant performed by students is one of the most commonly cited examples of impermissible endorsement, especially in elementary settings.

Schools have lost lawsuits over less than this.

Public schools are for education โ€” not evangelism.

What people are saying:

  • Facebook User: This is so bonkers to me. I grew up in a rural and very protestant area and a nativity at school was never a thought.
  • Facebook User: I mean at least have some farm animals running around to go with the nativity ๐Ÿคฃ
  • Facebook User: Ours also had nativity scene with the kids singing โ€œSilent Night.โ€ Iโ€™ve never thought about how bizarre it is for a bunch of kids to sing about a virgin until last night. ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜’
  • Facebook User: WHOA!!!!!!
  • Facebook User: Looks good to me

My only concern is that their presentation wouldnโ€™t have been biblical enough.

    • Facebook User: See, though, itโ€™s not about you.
