🚨 Peer-Reviewed. National. On the Record. 🚨
We’re proud to share that Secular Education Association is featured in a peer-reviewed academic article in Contexts, the flagship public sociology journal of the American Sociological Association.
📖 “Religion Goes Back to School”
✍️ Orit Avishai, PhD (Fordham University)
🗞 Contexts, Vol. 24, Issue 4 (Fall 2025)
The article traces the modern resurgence of religion in public schools — from Ten Commandments mandates and Bible-infused curricula to chaplains replacing licensed counselors and the explosive growth of released-time religious instruction (RTRI).
It situates today’s fights in historical context, from the Scopes “Monkey Trial” to the present-day legal and political push to merge conservative Christianity with state functions.
SEA’s work — and the voices of parents and organizers pushing back — is cited as part of a growing, grassroots movement defending pluralism, democracy, and the constitutional promise of public education.
One line that captures the stakes:
“Democracy is at stake. If we lose public schools, we lose this country.”
And from SEA:
“There is a literal war on the public-school day.” — Molly Gaines, Co-Founder
This matters because peer-reviewed research:
• Validates what parents and educators are experiencing on the ground
• Documents RTRI and Christian nationalist strategies with hard data
• Places local fights in a national, coordinated context
• Makes it impossible to dismiss this as “just politics” or “isolated incidents”
We’re grateful to researchers who take grassroots organizing seriously — and to every parent, teacher, and student who has spoken up, filed records requests, testified, or shared their story.
📌 Public schools are for everyone.
📌 Protecting church–state separation is about democracy, not hostility to religion.
📌 This work is being noticed — and it’s not going away.
