📄 We’ve submitted a formal letter of opposition to Indiana SB 88.

The Secular Education Association has submitted a formal letter of opposition to Indiana Senate Bill 88 (2026 Session).

While SB 88 is framed as an education bill, it combines sweeping and ideologically driven mandates that fundamentally alter the role of public schools. Our opposition is based on serious concerns about academic freedom, professional standards, local control, and the constitutional neutrality required of public education.

Among other provisions, Indiana SB 88:

• Mandates ideological and moral instruction unrelated to academic standards
• Restricts classroom discussion through vague and subjective language
• Requires the inclusion of the Ten Commandments in mandatory middle-school civics courses
• Weakens teacher licensure and professional safeguards
• Forces colleges to accept the Classic Learning Test by statute rather than evidence-based review

Public schools serve students from many backgrounds, beliefs, and family structures. They must remain neutral spaces focused on education—not vehicles for political or religious agendas imposed by law.

📌 Our full opposition letter outlines these concerns in detail and is part of the public record.

  • Facebook User: Please also look into the following bills in Indiana legislation as well:

HB1086: Public schools must display the Ten Commandments in each classroom and library in durable poster or framed picture.

HB 1232 (Bible as Literature): Requires age-appropriate instruction on the Bible’s history, ethics, Jesus’ life, and influence on Western civilization, emphasizing a secular, non-dogmatic approach

    • Facebook User: Facebook User neither of these bills are on the schedule for the house education committee today. The deadline to pass committee is Monday. Therefore they are dead bills. However language can be added last minute at the end of session to another bill so it’s important to stay alert.
