🚨UPDATE: Indiana HB 1086 Will NOT Advance
We’ve received confirmation from the Indiana Statehouse: House Bill 1086 has failed to advance out of the Indiana House and will not become law at this time.
Just days ago, the Secular Education Association testified in person before the Indiana House Education Committee in opposition to HB 1086 — a bill that would have elevated the Ten Commandments as a “protected writing” in Indiana law and restricted local school districts’ ability to prevent religious displays in public schools.

This outcome matters. 👏🏻
HB 1086 posed serious constitutional concerns by singling out and protecting a specific religious text in public school spaces, undermining the long-standing obligation of schools to remain religiously neutral and exposing districts to unnecessary legal risk.
We’re grateful to the broad coalition that spoke out — including civil liberties advocates and faith leaders from multiple traditions — all of whom made clear that religious freedom is best protected when the government does not endorse religion in public education.
This is a reminder that public engagement works. Testimony matters. Showing up matters. Speaking out matters.❤️
SEA will continue monitoring Indiana legislation closely and opposing efforts that erode the separation of church and state in our public schools.
Thank you to everyone who took action, shared information, and stood up for constitutional public education.
We’ll keep doing the same. 💪📚
