In Ohio, they told you HB 8 was about “Parents’ Rights.” They lied. It was about stripping local school boards of their power to protect instructional time.

For years, Ohio law was clear: school boards MAY adopt a policy for religious release time. It was a local choice. Boards could look at their students’ needs and say “no” to the logistical nightmare of programs like LifeWise Academy.

But the lobbyists got to work. By flipping that one word from “MAY” to “SHALL,” the state effectively handcuffed every local representative you elected.

The Numbers are Devastating

When you remove a school board’s right to say “No,” you aren’t empowering parentsโ€”you are empowering a private organization to dictate the terms of the school day.

The Threat is Spreading: 2026 Watchlist

Ohio was just the testing ground. Right now, copy-and-paste “Shall” bills are moving through legislatures across the country to strip away YOUR local control. These states are officially on the “Shall” watchlist for 2026:

Arizona (HB 2266): Currently moving through the House to force every district to comply.

Alabama (SB 4): A top priority for 2026 that would mandate districts adopt these policies.

Nebraska (LB 550): A carryover mandate bill currently back on the floor for debate.

Donโ€™t be like Ohio. Demand that your legislators keep the “May.”

Protect the right of your local school board to put education before indoctrination.
