The Kids Are Alright: A Morning at MVCDS 🏫
Yesterday, we had the privilege of visiting Maumee Valley Country Day School to join their Comparative Religion class. We spent the morning with an incredible group of Juniors and Seniors discussing a complex and often polarizing topic: Prayer and Religion in Public Schools.
What made this dialogue so distinct was the students’ unique positioning. As members of a private secular school community, they occupy a fascinating “third space.”
Because they aren’t bound by public school mandates, yet aren’t within a religious institution, they were able to approach the legal and ethical nuances of the public system as objective observers. This vantage point allowed for a level of analytical thinking and unbiased curiosity that was truly refreshing.
The takeaway? The kids are definitely alright. Their ability to navigate the tension between religious freedom and constitutional boundaries with such respect and sophistication gives us immense hope for the future of civil discourse. It gave us immense hope for the future, period.
Sharing our Resources: We’ve attached the handout we provided to the students below. It outlines the frameworks we used to guide our discussion on:
The legal history of the “wall of separation.”
The rights of students vs. the obligations of the state.
The role of faith in a diverse public square.

Thank you to MVCDS for the invitation and to the students for such a welcoming, intellectual, and inspiring conversation.
