The Freedom From Religion Foundation has as sent a formal letter to Elmwood Local Schools (Ohio) regarding released-time religious instruction program Lifewise Academy.

For context, SEA has been sharing documentation related to this district in our private community since 2024, including public records about how released-time programming intersects with public school property and resources.

We’re linking the original lease agreement below so people can review the primary document directly.

In the letter, FFRF raises concerns about how the program is being implemented — including whether released-time instruction is occurring on public property and whether the use of school resources could create church–state entanglement concerns.

Situations like this are not unique to one district. In our work across multiple states, we frequently see similar implementation questions arise wherever released-time programs are permitted and oversight is highly localized.

What people are saying:

  • Facebook User: This cult needs to get curtailed and investigated thoroughly.
  • Facebook User: Thank-you Freedom From Religion!
  • Facebook User: Follow the rules. Lifewise must operate OFF school property . I personally think this is a cult. Beware of the Kool-aid.
