West Virginia schools need funding, support, and resources.
Instead, they got God signs.
WV just required public schools to hang “In God We Trust” signs.
Before you come in hot with, “it’s our nAtIoNaL motto”…
Yes. Technically. But let’s talk about why it’s our motto.
“In God We Trust” did not become the official U.S. motto until 1956 — nearly 180 years after the founding — during the Cold War, when the U.S. was trying to distinguish itself from so-called “godless communism.”
So no, this is not some timeless founding principle.
It is a Cold War-era political slogan with religious language that was elevated long after the founding.
For most of American history, the motto that better represented this country was:
E pluribus unum — “Out of many, one.”
That message makes a lot more sense for public schools.
Because public schools serve:
• Christian students
• Jewish students
• Muslim students
• Hindu students
• Sikh students
• atheist students
• agnostic students
• and everyone else
When the government requires religious language in schools, it sends a message — whether intended or not — about who is seen as the “default.”
And here’s the bigger question:
Why are politicians focused on putting God signs in schools instead of fixing the actual problems schools face?
Teacher shortages
Hungry kids
Student mental health
Special education funding
Transportation gaps
Classroom resources
Instead…
They’re distributing Cold War propaganda motto signs. Literally.
SEA tracks these policies because they are part of a broader national pattern of increasing religious messaging and religious access points inside public education.
Public schools should unite students.
Not label them.
Out of many, one.
Always.
