They are trying to launder religious education through the public-school system.
That is what the Oklahoma religious charter fight is really about. Everything else is just noise to distract you.
A proposed virtual Jewish charter school is trying to become what St. Isidore could not: the nation’s first publicly funded religious charter school.
Do NOT let anyone twist this.
This is not about whether Jewish families have the right to Jewish education. OF COURSE THEY DO.
This is not about whether religious families can choose religious schools. OBVIOUSLY, THEY CAN.
🚨This is about whether the government can fund a religious school, authorize it as a public school, and force taxpayers to pay for religious instruction.🚨
THAT ANSWER SHOULD BE NO.
Public charter schools are public schools.
They are funded by the public.
Authorized by the state.
Supposed to serve all students.
Required to be nonsectarian.
You do not get to take public money, claim the public-school label, and then operate as a religious institution.
That is not equality.
That is not religious freedom.
That is the privatization of public education through a religious loophole.
And once the door opens, it will not stop with one school, one state, or even one religion…
This is the strategy: call religious schooling “choice,” call taxpayer funding “religious liberty,” and call anyone defending secular public education a bigot. Anti-Christian. Demonic. Etc.
ABSOLUTELY NOT.
Religious freedom protects private religious education.
It does not require the public to fund it.
Public schools belong to everyone.
We must keep them secular.
