Welcome to everyone who has recently found the Secular Education Association.

We are parents whose own children were negatively affected by LifeWise Academy. Like many families, we started by asking questions about what was happening in our own public schools.

What we discovered was bigger than one program, one district, or one state.

This has been decades in the making.

Little by little, Christian nationalist ideas have been normalized inside and around public schools: released-time religious instruction, Ten Commandments bills, school chaplain bills, FCA, Good News Club, “moral instruction” language, outside religious groups gaining access, and private organizations building pathways into the school day.

Each piece is often presented as harmless on its own..

LifeWise is often described as “nondenominational,” but that word can be misleading. It is not neutral, interfaith, or simply “character education.” It is an evangelical Protestant, gospel-centered Bible program operating during the public school day.

That distinction matters.

Together, these efforts are part of a much larger push to weaken secular public education, blur the line between church and state, and replace public schools that serve all children with systems shaped by one religious worldview.

Many of the same people pushing these policies do not simply want “religious freedom.” They openly believe public education is the problem. Some want public schools defunded, privatized, or dismantled entirely.

That is why SEA exists.

Every child has the right to their own faith, their own doubts, their own conscience, and their own identity. But public schools should not be used to promote religious instruction, outsource parts of the school day to private ministries, or make any child feel like they are on the outside of their own school community.

This is not about opposing Christianity. It is about opposing Christian nationalism in public education.

It is about protecting religious freedom by keeping public schools neutral.

We track legislation. We map released-time religious instruction expansion. We file public records requests. We analyze policies. We help communities ask better questions. We amplify parents, teachers, students, and taxpayers who are concerned about what is happening in their own districts.

If you are new here, we are glad you found us.

Please help us grow this movement. Share this page. Invite educators, parents, school staff, community members, and taxpayers. Send us what you are seeing in your district. Ask questions. Pay attention. Follow the records.

Public schools belong to everyone.

Religious freedom requires neutral schools.
