• Facebook User: My child used ESA and none of that scholarship went to anything religious. 🙄 It gives all parents of any belief the right to educate their child in whichever environment best fits the family. even agnostic parents can teach their children with this scholarship without paying for private religious systems. My child identified as LGBT and she had severe anxiety in public school and thanks to ESA she was able to take classes in a setting that allowed her to be herself and wear the clothing she was comfortable in regardless of if it came from the boys department or girls department of the store. I’m not denying that some parents do use their scholarship to pay for a private Christian academy but EVERY parent has the right to this scholarship and to choose from a variety of different classes and schools to accommodate their family. don’t see what one parent does and then take the scholarships away from all the kids.

    But draining public dollars into private systems is not a solution. It leaves the public system weaker for the kids who remain …including LGBTQ+ kids, disabled kids, low-income kids, and kids whose families have no realistic private option.

    We can care about your child’s experience and still oppose a policy that weakens public education for everyone else’s children.

Parents should absolutely be opposed of forced institutionalization of their children and if you admit that the public school system is unsafe and doesn’t support every child then demand that ALL parents who can’t afford private school out of their own pocket, lose their right to avoid such a place You should be ashamed of yourself for forcing our kids into these buildings everyday knowing how detrimental it is for them. all so some grown ups that have never met or interacted with our kids can take tax payer money that was meant to educate our children and instead go pocket it into their own accounts.     I’ve done charter and public schools, they are not what they used to be and quite frankly it’s a toss as to whether your child is bullied, sexually abused, seriously indoctrinated, can even read or do basic math by graduation.

Sadly, since a few folks may disagree with the majority of stakeholders, they claim it’s an “administrative issue”. It’s not. As for the current funding mess in Ohio, they claim its legislative majority has snookered their voters to push an ultraconservative Christian nationalist agenda, while not just disenfranchising what communities have voted for to support their schools, but to tell voters they’re stupid and don’t know what they’re voting for. The legislature has knowingly shifted more of the burden to taxpayers and have intentionally made it worse for public schools.

Public education was deemed necessary to help citizens understand the nature of democracy and to be able to discern truth from falsehoods. We now see the shift, as you pointed out, of some who want to educate children based upon the religious or political beliefs of the individual. That is why we have Ohio falling precipitously in educational attainment. The district I served was a struggling district in the late 80’s, but by the mid90’s, we were among the top 5% in Ohio, and remain a top tier school today. We did this with voter support and a funding plan that neutralized state losses of funding. The legislature is guilty of political malfeasance.

  • Facebook User: Facebook User Teacher union activity should be for “wages and working conditions” only. The unions I worked with over a 38 year period did NOT cross that line. Your grandson will be able to discern truth from falsehoods when he gets into high school. Elementary kids look to their teachers as parents. Truth is the key to having a nation. Since adults have different “takes” on what has been transpiring nationally, we are becoming more divisive rather than “ e pluribus unum”. It’s almost like we’re recasting the civil war.
