  In the mid 19th c there were riots that killed over 20 people in Philadelphia — over which Bible should be used in public schools. The Catholics were pissed the King James Version was the only version offered. The local bishop asked the board of controllers to let catholic kids read their version as well. The Protestant majority took it as an “affront to their religious beliefs” and an “attack on the Bible itself” (This is also the reason catholic schools exist)

  1. The “Christians are under attack” myth
  In the five months before the riots, nativist groups spread a deliberate lie that Catholics were trying to remove the Bible from public schools entirely. Today’s equivalent is the persistent right-wing claim that religious freedom is being systematically erased from public education, a grievance manufactured with the same cynical precision.
  2. Anti-immigrant hysteria
  No elaboration needed. The targets have changed, but the playbook hasn’t. The great-great-grandchildren of the Irish and German immigrants once scapegoated are now enthusiastically running the same play against the next wave of newcomers.
  3. Local leaders rallying around a manufactured threat
  In 1844, 94 Philadelphia clergymen united around a pledge to defend Protestant education against what they called “the assaults of Romanism.” In 2023, Texas Rep. Chip Roy declared: “Save Texas, Save America from Sharia Law jihad.” Different century, identical architecture of fear.
  The deepest irony? The riots weren’t just about Bible translations. They were fueled by the same virulent anti-immigrant sentiment we’re watching play out now with the descendants of those very targeted immigrants leading the charge. Same story, 175 years later, almost word for word. Some lessons, it seems, we’re determined never to learn.
