We posted a graphic saying segregation didn’t disappear – it got rebranded as “school choice,” “parental rights,” “religious freedom,” and “character education.”
And right on cue…. the racism crawled out from under the “school choice” marketing and introduced itself.
When they say “public schools are failing,” what they often mean is:
🚨 Public schools are public. That is the part they hate.
🚨They hate that their taxes educate children they do not personally approve of.
🚨They hate that democracy means sharing public institutions with people they cannot control.
Segregation becomes “school choice.”
Religious coercion becomes “character education.”
White flight becomes “parental rights.”
Privatization becomes “freedom.”
Same product. New packaging.
Public schools are not failing because children are “mixed together.” 😡
Public schools are being sabotaged because of bigotry in many forms – racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, classism, xenophobia, and Christian nationalism.
That is the rot under the rhetoric. 💯
They call it “choice” because “I don’t want my child educated beside those children” sounds exactly as ugly as it is.
They call it “parental rights” because “public institutions should cater to my religion, my politics, and my prejudices” does not poll well.
They call it “character education” because “we want access to public school children for religious recruitment” would set off alarms.
They call it “indoctrination” because public schools teach children to exist in a world full of people their parents were taught to fear.
Same product. New packaging. Same racist bullshit.
What people are saying:
- Secular Education Association: And before anyone starts blaming the children- stop. We won’t hear it.
-Your public school is struggling because it has been defunded, drained, and sabotaged for decades.
-Your child did not get the support they needed because staff were cut.
-Your child’s classroom was disrupted because districts do not have enough aides, intervention specialists, counselors, paraeducators, nurses, substitutes, and support staff.
Disabled children are not the problem.
Poor children are not the problem.
Immigrant children are not the problem.
Black and brown children are not the problem.
LGBTQ+ children are not the problem.
Non-Christian children are not the problem. The problem is that public schools are being forced to serve every child with fewer resources, fewer staff, bigger classes, higher needs, and less support; all while the same people who helped create the crisis point at the children and blame them for it. Get real.
The solution is not more of the same shit that created the problem.
- Facebook User: Imagine what they are teaching in all these Christian classes if this is the crap these lobbyists bring to the public social platforms.
- Facebook User: You’d think these morons would not post so openly how racist they are and how they speak to women. Sadly, though, I think I found him and he owns his own business.
- Facebook User: Public schools are failing because teachers are forced to teach a student how to pass a state proficiency test, and they aren’t teaching students how to LEARN
- Facebook User: Thank you thank you thank you! Finally. Someone else that understands. Even liberals look at me like I’m crazy when I say schools aren’t failing academically (more so funding). And “where are you getting that information that they are academically failing from”?
No one asks this question.Another history lesson unfortunately (or fortunately?) When Reagan was office there was a huge push to show that schools were failing. They published a whole report on it called “A Nation at Risk”. It showed test scores slipping. What they didn’t mention was Simpson paradox. A Nation at Risk Report showed declining sat scores between the 1970-1990. But when they actually looked into it (see Sandia Report) nearly every subgroup tested (ethnic minorities, low ranked students, rich kids, poor kids blah blah) improved during those years. The average changes if the PROPORTIONS among the sub groups change. During the period before the 70s only top tier kids took the test. And they certainly weren’t black or other minorities at the time. Anyone who knows anything about educational history knows this.
They were mad that the extending of educational opportunities to a broader population dropped the “average test score”.
The government didn’t officially release the Sandia Report but in 1993 the journal of educational research printed it. And of course no one read it but specialists.
Kids aren’t failing, schools aren’t failing, our government is failing to keep them both afloat financially. Admins are failing teachers by bending to the will of crappy parents who only think about one kid…their own. All because they don’t want the minority kid at the bottom to outsmart the white kid at the top. God forbid.
The best part? The researchers who were hired by the Reagan administration to do the report found something completely opposite of what his admin was expecting so they were told (and i quote) “bury this or we will bury you”.
I very much encourage everyone to do some research on the Sandia report . It will make you question the failing schools trope and ask, “why exactly are schools failing, who is telling me these things, and what do they gain from it?”
- Facebook User: Facebook User fascinating insight on the history. Thank you for sharing this information!
- Facebook User: Kris Wigglesworth unfortunately, they’re already saying who’s next…kids in special education, who are disabled, or who have an IEP or 504. My son is going to be a senior next year, and thank goodness his IEP is very minimal now, and he’s at a tech school, because if they’re allowed to gut FAPE and IDEIA, there will be a whole lot of kids that are truly left behind. If there’s anyone still trying to deny what this is, crack open a history book. This has all happened before.
- Facebook User: Thank Trump for “Making Racism Great Again”.
- Facebook User: Omg I haven’t heard that J word since my super racist grandpa from North Carolina died in 1991…… What is wrong with people?
- Facebook User: I teach in a mostly white, rural district. I have the same issues with those students that teachers in larger, more diverse districts have. Now what’s his excuse?????
- Facebook User: Facebook User he’s just gonna tell you you’re a liberal plant and a liar
- Facebook User: I have been saying this for YEARS!!!
- Secular Education Association: Facebook User KEEP SAYING IT!
- Facebook User: Secular Education Association You betcha!!!
- Facebook User: Right on.
- Facebook User: In “Off School Property” Lifewise asserts that democracy and freedom are only possible with western white Christian culture.
Christian Nationalists say coded words but in the end they ain’t nothing but Klan bois. - Facebook User: THIS
