  This is relevant given the recent push to insert Christianity into public schools.

  It is important to remember that the reason Western Civilization has been so successful is that about 500 years ago or so, Europe began to loosen Religion’s grip on Science and Government.
  Galileo’s fight with Rome is one example of Religion hindering progress.

  Our founding fathers were aware of this, and that is why, as Deists, they only spoke of Religion in general terms in the Declaration of Independence and The Constitution.

  In fact, this separating of Religion from Science and Government is something Islam experienced from about 800 to 1000 AD. At that time, Muslims were the leaders in advances in medicine, math (Algebra), and other sciences. It was the Muslims who kept the knowledge of the ancient Egyptians and Greeks alive. All while most Europeans were running around throwing spears at each other and being scared of the dark. (I exaggerate a little.)

  And then, the Conservatives/Fundamentalists of Islam reclaimed control of the society and the Muslim world has been fighting those shackles ever since.

  The US is now headed in a similar direction, and no good can come from a return to a time when Religion rules Government and Science.

    But notice two things:

    1) A footnote isn’t a binding definition.
    2) Even if it *were* legally binding, there’s a difference between secularism and Secular Humanism.
