Katy Faust has built a national organization around the claim that other people’s families are driven by adult desires, unresolved wounds, and disregard for children.
Meanwhile, her own public ideology is rooted in her parents’ divorce, her mother’s relationship with a woman, and her interpretation of what that childhood meant.
She accuses LGBTQ parents of projecting their desires onto children…while projecting her own childhood experience onto millions of families she has never met.
She says children should not be used to validate adults…while using her own childhood as validation for a political campaign against other adults’ rights.
She insists one family story proves what all children need…while demanding that everyone else’s lived experience be dismissed.
👉And this is about far more than homophobia and transphobia.
Them Before Us and the broader movement Katy Faust helps lead want to reshape marriage, parenthood, reproduction, adoption, and divorce law around one rigid definition of family.
They advocate for:
• Overturning Obergefell v. Hodges and ending the constitutional right to same-sex marriage.
• Denying same-sex couples equal recognition as parents and privileging a married biological mother and father in law and policy.
• Opposing surrogacy and donor conception.
• Restricting IVF and opposing laws that recognize access to IVF as a right, arguing that the process commodifies children, separates them from biological parents, and endangers or destroys embryos.
• Rolling back no-fault divorce, preserving fault-based divorce rules, imposing waiting periods, and making it more difficult to leave a marriage.
• Treating adoption not as another equally valid way to form a family, but as a response to tragedy and biological-family loss. They argue that separation from biological parents should be a last resort, that adoption carries an inherent wound.
• Opposing forms of adoption or parentage that intentionally sever a child from a biological mother or father—including some embryo-adoption arrangements—because they believe children possess a right to both biological parents.
This is not simply a belief that children deserve safety and stability. Of course they do!
🚨It is an organized effort to decide whose marriage counts, who may become a parent, how people may conceive, what makes an adoptive family legitimate, and how difficult it should be to escape a marriage.
So the woman whose worldview was shaped by her parents’ divorce now campaigns to make divorce harder for everyone else.
The woman raised by her mother and her mother’s female partner now campaigns to strip other same-sex couples of marriage and parental rights.
She takes her own childhood, her own family, and her own interpretation of both—and attempts to write them into law for millions of strangers.
Her childhood may explain her beliefs.
It does not justify turning those beliefs into law.
What people are saying:
- Secular Education Association: Why is SEA talking about this?
Because Them Before Us is not just an anti-LGBTQ organization commenting on marriage and family. It is part of a broader political network working to carry a conservative Christian definition of family into law, public policy, and education.
Katy Faust’s organization promotes a “Pro-Child Politics” agenda that includes education policy, partners with major parental-rights groups, and works alongside organizations already active in school-board fights, curriculum battles, voucher campaigns, and efforts to redefine whose families public institutions should recognize and respect.
When a movement argues that only one kind of family is legitimate, that belief does not stay confined to marriage law. It reaches classrooms, school forms, library books, sex education, student protections, adoption policy, and the treatment of children whose families do not fit that model.
That makes it a public-education issue—and therefore our issue.
- Facebook User: Sounds like Katy needs therapy more than to start a hate group. Wow.
- Facebook User: Project your issues and opinions onto others much?
- Facebook User: Why is it “2 men buying a baby”? Would she say that straight, cis couples who adopt are buying babies?
- Facebook User: Facebook User duh. Take your feigned ignorance and shove it up your ass. You know exactly what shes saying. You just play dumb because its all you people know. Im sure your dad and your dads boyfriend are super proud of your ignorance
- Facebook User: Facebook User No. I’ve had conversations with her, unfortunately. She would say that the straight couple is stepping in and stepping up for a parentless child. She would see that child as having a mom and dad so long as their adoptive parents are female and male
- Facebook User: And the thing is, two things can be true. It can be true that a lot of kids have trauma around adoption, divorce, and remarriage AND that a lot of kids are better off as a result of adoption, divorce and remarriage. It can be true that single parent families have challenges that many married couples don’t face, and that a single parent can be a very healthy, solid parent and the best answer for that child.
It can be the case that mothers deserve assistance to keep their babies vs being pressured into adoption, AND that there are a lot of kids in foster care who need homes.
And, it is 100% true that when you paint only one kind of family as valid, and only represent ONE kind of family in a classroom, it makes everyone outside said kind of family feel worse and invalid. Books showing different gmsily structures, from early childhood on, are essential.
- Facebook User: Facebook User well said!
I’m an adoptee and my birth mother Mary will never know because it was a forced adoption.
She never stopped being my Mom.
No family is not valid because its different!
- Facebook User: Facebook User well said!
- Facebook User: Sounds like it’s basically a rebrand of Moms for Liberty
- Facebook User: Facebook User they’re adding in veiled threats of genocide now though
- Facebook User: All this because Katy Faust refuses to just go to therapy and actually do the work to help herself move on and heal.
- Secular Education Association: Facebook User BINGO
- Facebook User: I was thinking some of the same. Sounds like she turned her hurt into “control” to try to create what *she* believes is a *perfect* world.
- Facebook User: Facebook User You nailed it. I’ve had conversations with Katy Faust. She believes her mom robbed her of her dad and replaced him with a woman
- Facebook User: Likely she’d be more well adjusted if her mom had felt it safe to be herself and come out earlier. It sounds like the disruption of her parents divorce and mom coming out later in life is actually what caused her issues.
- Facebook User: Facebook User jfc what a weird fantasy inner life Faust leads. Having two ‘heterosexual’ parents who are forcing themselves to stay together “for the sake of the children” does not a safe, happy childhood make.
- Facebook User: Ask someone who is adopted if they do. Their answer might surprise you.
- Facebook User:
- Facebook User: Have A Gay Day in Dayton, is raising money for more loving signs.

- Facebook User: I was “bought” by a hetero couple in 1964 for $25. What a piece of garbage that poster is.
- Facebook User: Conservative Christians have repeatedly proven their inability to accept anyone who doesn’t align w their narrow & bigoted beliefs. They are incompatible w an inclusive society.
