🎉 Back to school season can be an exciting time for students. 🎉
It can also be intimidating. It’s a time when students are faced with an onslaught of changes. New buildings, new faces, new teachers, new schedules, new lessons and new routines.
These experiences are exactly why it is so imperative for public schools to be inclusive and welcoming to all students.
‼️Children and parents alike have the right to not be confronted by a private religious organization proselytizing on school grounds.
‼️Students should not feel extra pressure to sign up for religious indoctrination just because their friends are.
‼️Families of minority religions should not have to worry about their children being seduced with candy in exchange for signing up for Christian classes.
‼️Teachers should not be promoting religious programming during family introductions and classroom tours.
‼️Classroom schedules should not list religious instruction classes as part of students’ weekly specials rotations.
👉 These are not theoretical concerns. These are issues they Secular Education Association sees every, single, year. When back to school activities start, we get reports and questions from parents from all across the country who first hear about LifeWise at open houses and in their students elementary classrooms.
🛑 If you are faced with one of these scenarios or any others, document everything. Take pictures, record conversations if local laws permit, discuss your concerns with teachers and school officials via email only to maintain a paper trail.

The powers that be, the school administrators, the national organizations and law firms…none of them will protect or defend you. Public shaming, fear of controversy, parental outrage, and community pressure are often times the only tools that school administrators fear.

When our co-founder’s daughter had her constitutional rights violated in second grade, there was nowhere for him to turn. No one for him to reach out to for advice or support. The organizations we’re told will defend our rights did nothing. There was no opposition to LifeWise and their tactics to be found.
👉 That’s why SEA exists.

- Secular Education Association: Facebook User it very much depends on the specifics, if they are student led clubs, it’s likely permissible. If it’s not it would depend on district policy and any outside organization must be given the same opportunities to post them (this is unlikely unless it is specifically a community bulletin board space).

- Facebook User: In the front office of our new school a staff member has mounted a large cross. I have my doubts about its legality, but don’t know yet.
