🚨 LAPORTE, INDIANA: A 501(c)(3) AND A SCHOOL BOARD ENDORSEMENT

Tonya James isn’t just a LifeWise supporter. She is the director of LifeWise Academy LaPorte and an administrator of its public Facebook group.
And in that LifeWise Academy LaPorte group, she posted:

“I encourage you to vote Ryan Seaburg for LPCSC school board.”

LifeWise, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Federal law prohibits 501(c)(3) organizations from participating or intervening in political campaigns for or against candidates for public office. But we don’t even have to stop at federal law…

LifeWise’s own Political Activity Policy says employees engaging in political activity must do so “in an individual capacity” and “not as representatives of LifeWise.” It also says: “the use of LifeWise Academy and its assets … in political messages, campaigns or advertisements is strictly prohibited.”

Yet here we have a LifeWise program director, administering a LifeWise-branded group, using that group to explicitly tell people who to vote for. 👀 And yes, Indiana law requires districts to accommodate qualifying released-time religious instruction.

👉The district may be required to work with LifeWise. LifeWise is not required to help choose who governs the district.

🚨This raises serious questions about 501(c)(3) political activity, LifeWise’s own policies, bias, influence, and conflicts of interest.
We’ll leave the ultimate legal determination to the appropriate authorities.

But as for whether this deserves scrutiny?
